How To Pick An Acting Coach
How To Pick An Acting Coach
Are you looking for an acting coach to help you improve your craft? Since there are so many of them out there, I would like to give you a couple of tips on how to find the right one.
The first thing you want to look for is how often you will have the opportunity to go up in class. Some teachers hold classes so large that the students rarely get a chance to perform. Next, how many students working with this coach are also booking jobs? You want to make sure that you are in an acting class surrounded by people who are working in the field of acting rather than just training in the craft. Last, but most important, picking a teacher is all about picking someone who really resonates with you. If they are well-respected in the industry, it’s an added bonus. This teacher needs to be someone that you trust, someone that you connect with and someone whose method compliments your learning style.
There is another more important element here as well, marketing. There is more to acting success that just being a good actor. Though craft is important, the real key is to market. Seventy-five percent of your time, energy and money must be spent on becoming known. It’s a damn shame if you are talented and well-trained, and no one knows you exist. Yes, I want you in an acting class. I want you to flex your acting muscles, but more important, I want you to flex your marketing muscles.
Marketing is more fun than you think. It’s not about selling or convincing people to hire you. Marketing is truly about authentically sharing who you are and letting people in the business (agents, managers, casting directors, producers and filmmakers) decide for themselves what to do with you. If you’re really serious about your acting career, you need to do much more than just be a good actor. You must embrace your marketing.
